The municipality of As Nogais is located 52 km from the capital of the province, between the southern limit of the Sierra de Os Ancares and the valley that forms the course of the river Navia, within the set of Galician Eastern Sierras.
Ocupa an extension of about 112 km² and bordering to the north with the municipality of Becerreá, to the south with Pedrafita do Cebreiro, to the east with Cervantes and to the west with Triacastela.

Que Os Ancares is a region historically populated evidences its numerous archaeological remains, dated many of they of 4,000 years ago. Castros, dolphins, dolmens and petroglyphs are scattered throughout the region.
The first remains of settlements in As Nogais belong to the Castro culture.

The territory on which the municipality sits corresponds to a spectacular mountain landscape in which nature is the protagonist. It is characterized by an alternation between valleys, highlighting the river course of the river Navia, which crosses from southeast to northwest the whole territory, and generates environments of an incomparable landscape quality.

On its banks we find walnut, hazel, pear, and cereals peaks of species such as chestnut and birch. Among the mountain ranges stand out, on the one hand, the Sierras del Rañadoiro and the Piornal that surpass the 1,300 meters of altitude, Travesa, Pintinidoira and Pico do Corbo (1387 meters). Along with the river Navia are numerous other water courses that flow into the Navia, such as the Boullón that is born in the parish of Alence and the river Valdeparada, which is born in the border town of Piedrafita del Cebrero, and ends at As Nogais.
